Blog #18: Food Memoir

  1. Your memoir was so funny! I really liked it. I like how even though as a high school senior it's not really "cool" to love your mom, but you took the risk and made a great video. It was super cute. For your discussion, I thought you brought up some very good points. I like how you brought in not only Janie's behavior, but also Tea Cake and how power is used. When it came to power, I like how explicitly you described ignorance versus insecurity. Another good point you made was about Janie's internal conflicts, and how her lack of assertion led to her submission throughout.

  2. Yash,
Your memoir was great (AS WAS THE CAKE--major yum!). Your voice came through very well and you did a good job portraying a conversation between a bickering mother and son. I liked that you made a connection to your mother and truly embodied the act of communion Foster was discussing.
During the fishbowl discussion, I liked the point you made about what you want to do versus doing it in reality. This was a major element in Jody and Janie's relationship. As Janie's voice was suppressed, she developed deep feelings of hatred and she wanted to defy him but it took her so long until she finally did so in the shop as they were older. The discussion of the environment being just right was also an interesting idea.

  3. Congrats on completing your food memoir and Socratic seminar! I thought your voice really came through in the video and through your writing. It was neat how you made the "mama's boy" comment at the end of the video to have the relationship be the last thing the audience remembers after watching. Later in the fishbowl discussion, I found it interesting that you made the connection between TEWWG and Rapunzel. Your question about outside powers diminishing voice and power of Janie sparked a good conversation about the role of society in regards to your prompt. As a member of your Rapunzel powerpoint group, I completely agree with your analysis there. Great work!

  4. Yash,
Your memoir was super funny! I thought that choosing to talk about your mom and her cake was sweet and sincere. You did a really nice job about making sure your voice came through, and the German-ish music was pretty awesome.
During the fishbowl, I thought you made a lot of interesting comments, like for example, the comparison you made between TEWWG and one of the fairy tale poems. I also thought it was interesting how you talked about the power relationship between Janie and all of her husbands (mostly Tea Cake).

  5. Howdy Yash!
Your memoir was very funny! From the beginning with the German intro to the music to the witty comments, I was trying my hardest not to laugh throughout. You did a good job putting a voice to yourself and your mother in the dialogue and the cake was amazing!

I loved your point about how the environment has a lot to do with your subconscious voice. You had some great questions that facilitated the discussion, like do outside powers negatively impact personal voice. You also mentioned the phrase "blind ignorance" and how the power from being a black male led to Jody's blindness.

  6. Hi Yash!

First off, I really enjoyed the memoir with it's lightheartedness, and the fact that it contrasted with the serious nature of the subject made it all the more memorable. The cake looked delicious and I really loved the fact that you said your mother can make you happy even when you don't think you can. In the discussion, I really liked the concept of the environment being right, and after further thought I really understood the gravity of what environmental factors can do to a situation. I thought that your statements regarding it were very well thought out, and your questions, especially those concerning the power of Janie and her spouses, were intriguing.

  8. Your memoir was funny, and I liked that you picked a food that wasn't necessarily culturally significant, but definitely individually significant. The music break you had in the middle, and the cake end result was great. During the fishbowl discussion, I think that the discussion about the insecurities of the characters within Their Eyes Were Watching God was interesting. I never realized that so many figures in authority were that way to mask their own inadequacy. The comment about the Bluebeard fairy tale, and how Bluebeard was in power, but killed the women out of upset disappointment went well with that.
